Access & safety

Public access

America's oldest continuously-operating short-line railroad (chartered 1832) runs heritage steam excursions year-round on a 4.5-mile branch to Paradise, where the line meets the Amtrak Keystone Corridor. Visitor center, museum, and observation deck are all public.

Safety notes

Visitor areas are fully public. Stay behind designated lines at the yard and Paradise crossing. Riding the excursion gives the best access — leaning over open Dutch doors of the heritage cars is at-your-own-risk per RR signage.

Parking

Large free parking lot at the visitor center. Plenty of capacity except for Day Out With Thomas weekends in fall.

Best time of day

Mid-morning to mid-afternoon — the Strasburg yard and the train turnaround at Paradise both photograph well in mid-day sun. Check strasburgrailroad.com for exact departure times.

Train frequency

Steam excursions multiple times daily in season (April–December). At Paradise, the Strasburg line crosses the Amtrak Keystone Corridor — Keystone trains pass roughly every 30-60 minutes weekday peaks.

Nearby

Restaurants, gift shop, Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania directly across the street (separate institution, also worth a stop). Full Lancaster County tourist services nearby.
