Access & safety

Public access

NPS-operated railroad heritage park on the site of the former DL&W Scranton Yard. Public roundhouse tours, active steam + diesel excursions, and a working yard adjacent to current Reading & Northern / Delaware-Lackawanna freight operations.

Safety notes

Park areas are public NPS land. Adjacent active railroad property is fenced; stay on the museum side. R&N and DL crews operate around the visitor areas — give freight movements wide clearance.

Parking

Free NPS parking lot adjacent to the visitor center. Plenty of capacity. Located right downtown — walking distance to Scranton restaurants/hotels.

Best time of day

Late morning best for roundhouse exterior shots; afternoon for excursion train departures. NPS hours typically 9am–5pm year-round.

Train frequency

Heritage operations daily in-season; freight on adjacent tracks several times per day (R&N + DL). Excursion trains run weekends + select weekdays; check nps.gov/stea.

Nearby

Visitor center + restrooms + bookstore on-site. Downtown Scranton restaurants within 3 blocks. The Mall at Steamtown is adjacent.
