Access & safety

Public access

Western Maryland Scenic Railroad operates heritage steam (Locomotive 1309, the largest operational 2-6-6-2 in the US) and diesel excursions from the restored Cumberland depot. Amtrak Capitol Limited stops at a separate adjacent platform. CSX and NS mainline freight passes regularly. The depot area is fully public; WMS ticket holders board on-site.

Safety notes

Active mainline operations — stay on the public depot side. The CSX engine terminal and yard west of the station are private property; photograph only from public streets. Heritage steam operations include hot cinders + steam exhaust — follow WMS staff directions on excursion days.

Parking

Free station parking lot; downtown Cumberland public garages nearby. WMS visitors get priority parking on excursion days.

Best time of day

WMS excursions typically depart late morning. CSX freight is best mid-day; NS Western Maryland line traffic varies. Sunset on the depot architecture is a classic shot.

Train frequency

Moderate — Amtrak Capitol Limited once each direction daily (typically evening EB / pre-dawn WB). CSX Cumberland Sub freight 15-30 trains/day. NS Western Maryland line lighter. WMS heritage operations on weekends and select weekdays.

Nearby

Downtown Cumberland restaurants, restrooms, and the C&O Canal Visitor Center (a separate park) within walking distance. The Allegheny Highlands Trail also starts here.
