Access & safety

Public access

Daniel Burnham's 1908 beaux-arts station — fully public. The main hall is the photographic centerpiece; the concourse leads to the gated platforms where ticketed passengers can access tracks 7-29. Non-ticketed visitors stay in the public areas, which include the entire main hall, the dining concourse, and the West Hall.

Safety notes

Amtrak Police and Metro Transit Police are highly visible. Photography in public areas is permitted. Do not attempt to access platforms without a ticket. Standard urban awareness applies.

Parking

Paid garage on-site (Union Station Parking). WMATA Red Line + bus access is the recommended approach. H Street NE bike share / Capital Bikeshare stations nearby.

Best time of day

Mid-morning for natural light through the main hall barrel vault. The interior is dramatic at all hours.

Train frequency

Extremely high — Amtrak terminus / through point for NEC service, plus all long-distance trains (Crescent, Cardinal, Capitol Limited, Silver Star, Silver Meteor, Palmetto, Carolinian, Vermonter). MARC + VRE peak service from 5am-10am and 3pm-7pm weekdays.

Nearby

Full food court, retail, restrooms inside the station. National Postal Museum next door, Capitol Hill restaurants 4-5 blocks south.
