Tennessee Pass — Leadville area

Safety: cautionoverlook

Leadville, CO

Union Pacific

Access & safety

Public access

Public US-24 highway pullouts parallel UP's dormant Tennessee Pass route through Leadville and toward the summit. Highest mainline rail crossing in North America (10,221 ft). Currently storage-only — any train movement is a rare-train event worth alerting on.

Safety notes

Elevation 10,000+ ft — altitude sickness is real for visitors. Weather changes fast year-round; afternoon thunderstorms and winter whiteouts are common. The track is still UP property — view from public roads only, never walk the ROW or trespass on bridges.

Parking

Several roadside pullouts along US-24 between Leadville and the Tennessee Pass summit. Town of Leadville has free parking near the historic depot.

Best time of day

Late morning to mid-afternoon for the best mountain light. Winter dramatically extends shadow seasons; summer monsoon thunderstorms build by 2pm.

Train frequency

EXTREMELY RARE — line has been dormant for freight since 1997. Occasional inspection / storage moves only. Any sighting is significant.

Nearby

Leadville has full services: restaurants, lodging, the Colorado Railroad Museum branch and Leadville Colorado & Southern excursion railroad (separate tourist line).
