Durango, CO

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge

Access & safety

Public access

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates a heritage steam line from Durango to Silverton through the Animas Canyon. The Durango depot at 479 Main Ave has a public museum, gift shop, and yard viewing area. The Silverton terminus is also fully accessible without a ticket. Trains depart Durango in the morning and return mid-afternoon.

Safety notes

The depot, museum, and platform areas are safe public access. The track between Durango and Silverton runs through the wilderness of the San Juan National Forest — DO NOT attempt to hike along it; the canyon is steep and the line is private property. Wildfire risk is non-trivial; the railroad voluntarily ceases steam operations during high fire conditions.

Parking

Pay parking lots adjacent to the Durango depot. Downtown Durango has metered street parking and several public garages within easy walking distance.

Best time of day

Morning departure from Durango (~8:00-9:30am depending on season) is the best photo opportunity; return arrivals in late afternoon catch warm light. Silverton arrivals around midday.

Train frequency

D&SNG runs scheduled trains roughly daily May-October, reduced winter schedule with Polar Express and similar holiday operations. Generally 1-3 round trips per day in peak season.

Nearby

Downtown Durango is a full-service mountain town: restaurants, lodging, museums, breweries. The D&SNG Museum at the depot is included with depot admission.
